Landlocked, Bolivia, is not on the radar of many travelers. It is a shame, because this beautiful nation is home to many beautiful people, places, and things. Bolivia is South America's most indigenous country, with over 60% of the population claiming indigenous heritage, including Aymará, Quechua, Guaraní and over 30 other ethnic groups. In addition to the indigenous cultures, are colonial cities and ancient civilizations. The opportunities for cultural and adventure activities are unparalleled.

Colonial architecture, whitewashed buildings, and pretty patios surrounded by low mountains give them good reason to give Sucre this exclusive title. The strict controls on development have kept Sucre a true display. In 1991, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sucre's appeal is not merely superficial, there is a wealth of churches and museums, as well as plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. A few interesting places to visit include the convent of the Recoleta (established by the Franciscan order in 1601), the textile museum, and the Casa de la Libertad (where Bolivian independence was declared in 1825).

Just outside of Sucre, is the former mansion of the wealthy Argandoña family. After taking an extended tour of Europe, Don Francisco Argandoña decided to build a "palace" reflecting the various architectural styles he admired overseas.

Take a walk much further back in history to see the largest collection of dinosaur tracks in the world. These tracks were found in 1994 by workers from the local Sucre cement factory. There are about 5,000 impressions of dinosaur footprints from at least 250 different dinosaurs embedded on a gigantic, near-vertical limestone rock. Experts believe the footprints date back some 60 million years, before the Andes were even formed.

There are plenty of top-notch hotels and restaurants in the area and Sucre is easily accessible by plane or bus. There are daily flights from La Paz and Santa Cruz, and bus connections in Bolivia's main cities. So hop on a place or a bus to Sucre where you can enjoy the warm climate at 2,790 meters above sea level.
