Oktoberfest is nigh, and there has never been a better time to study German in Germany or else plan an Oktoberfest of your own! The Euro has fallen, which makes it more inexpensive for North Americans to travel to Europe, and Oktoberfest is a world-renowned beer-drinking celebration that you've truly got to see to believe!
Traditionally running the last three days of September and ending on October 3rd, Octoberfest is recognized around the world but has its roots in Munich, Germany.
On the first day of Oktoberfest, the mayor of Munich will tap the first keg of beer and announce to the crowd "O'zapft is!" ("It's tapped!"), and then throngs of thirsty beer-drinkers from around the world, steins in hand, will fill up on fine German Weissbier. While there are many copycat celebrations within Germany and around the world, the festival in Munich is known as the largest folk festival in the world.
If you can't make it this year, you have plenty of time to sign up for a later trip to Munich or prepare yourself for next year's Oktoberfest!
