If you should choose to study Italian in Rome, one must-see attraction is undoubtedly the Colosseum! An iconic relic of the Roman Empire and partially-damaged yet ever-astounding feat of engineering and architecture, the Colosseum is located in the city's center and is nearly impossible to miss!
The construction of the Colosseum was completed in 80 AD and was used for holding public events like battles, animal hunts, executions, and theatrical workshops and productions. Its bowl shape provided maximum audibility and views for up to 50,000 spectators at a time.
The structure acts as a backdrop to the hustle and bustle of modern Roman society, but it is respected as a symbol of proud Roman heritage. It's even featured on the Italian 5-Euro coin! There is slight structural damage to the outer walls caused by centuries of earthquakes, car exhaust, and weathering, and there are even almost 300 species of plantlife growing within and around its walls, but its still open to the public. It's not allowed to host events anymore, however there are often concerts and ceremonies staged directly outside.
To visit the Colosseum, you must either reserve tickets ahead of time or else arrive to the ticket office up to an hour or so before you plan to enter. Admission can cost anywhere from 5-20 Euro depending on timing.
