Did you know that Hong Kong is comprised of 262 islands, and that Hong Kong Island is the second largest? How about that its name means "fragrant harbor"? Hong Kong, while being a hugely populated city with a lot of culture and diversity, is a city many Americans don't know much about! Studying Chinese in Hong Kong may be one of the most exciting and different experiences you have in your life!
Hong Kong is a world in itself, full of contradicting attributes: peaceful yet energetic, modern yet traditional, and even giant yet miniscule!! There is an endless supply of places to discover, people to meet, and things to you; a Chinese student will never be bored.
We've spoken to friends who've gone here to study the traditional Cantonese language widely spoken here, and all had nothing but highly favorable things to say about their experiences. Here is a list of things they loved most!
- Excellent public transportation: Once arriving in Hong Kong, visitors can purchase an "Octopus Card", which can be used on most transportation and even at some restaurants and attractions! The subway system is great, and connects all major islands. The city also boasts double-decker trams called "ding-dings" and three different bus systems!
- Kowlonn Island: This place is abuzz practically 24/7 with marketplaces and attractions. There is the Kowlonn Waterfront to explore, as well as the Shek Kip Mei Estate. An interesting stop on the island is 'Thai Town', home to many Thai ex-pats. Also there's the 'Avenue of the Stars,' akin to Hollywood's walk of fame, and a nightly 'Symphony of Lights' show at Victoria Harbor.
- Portland Street, Mong Kok: Portland Street is comparable to Bourbon Street in New Orleans or the Red Light District in Amsterdam; rampant with cafes, restaurants, "hostess bars," performers, and street food. This is a people-watchers heaven.
- Lantau Island: Go to Lantau Island to discover the peaceful, spiritual side of Hong Kong. Here, students can climb the Giant Buddha Statue, which is visible for miles!
There's just so much to do and see in this exciting Asian hub!
