Guatemala is a beautiful country located in Central America, bordering Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador as well as the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Many Spanish language schools are located in Guatemala, primarily in five different locations across the country: Antigua, Flores, Huehuetenango, Panajachel, and Quezaltenango. The greatest concentration of Guatemala schools is in Antigua, followed by Quezaltenango.
Antigua is a small, very beautiful and charming Spanish colonial city located in the Guatemala highlands and surrounded by mountains as well as three extinct volcanoes. Known for its high-quality Spanish schools, a wonderful variety of bars and restaurants, and peaceful vibe, this city is a true favorite of language travelers.
Flores is a quiet tropical island village located on lake Peten Itza. It is home to colorful markets, quality restaurants, friendly people, and of course, a handful of schools to study Spanish. Other points of interest on the island of Flores are the ancient Mayan archeological sites of Tikal and Yaxha. Flores is a good choice for someone looking to study at a more remote location in Guatemala.
Huehuetenango, a city in the western highlands, was the capital of the Mam Maya people before the Spanish arrived. Its name means “the place of the ancients”. Huehuetenango is a city divided neatly into two different halves. The western section is slow-paced and relaxed with a beautiful plaza. The other half is crowded and lively with a market and many travelers and tourists. There are a few language schools to choose from in Huehuetenango.
Located on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Panajachel is a lively, increasingly touristy town with a growing number of schools that specialize in studying Spanish. There are many hotels, restaurants, and bars lining the streets of Panajachel. This city was once a village at the center of the Mayan world and is located close to Chichicastenango, a famous market that attracts people from all walks of life.
Known as the “second city” of Guatemala, Quezaltenango or Xela as it is referred to locally, is located in the western highlands. The name “Xela” refers to the ten mountain peaks that surround the city. There are a large number of schools in Quezaltenango from which to choose. The atmosphere of this city is more reserved than in other locations in Guatemala.
There are five varied locations in Guatemala in which Spanish language schools are available. Each place has its own charm, from the peaceful colonial city of Antigua, the tropical island of Flores, culturally diverse Huehuetenango, bustling Panajachel, and subdued Quezaltenango, there is a place that is right for every language traveler seeking a quality Spanish school in Guatemala.
