While many people think of studying abroad during their college years, it’s just a small piece of what is available. Programs are available for all ages and skill levels. Some of the most diverse study abroad providers offer programs for children as young as 5, and specialized programs for adults over the age of 50.
There are many different ways to study abroad as well. Of course, there are standard language immersion programs. These programs generally consist of several hours of classes per day, and participants stay with host families during their time abroad. Often, excursions are available, either prepared by the school, or planned and executed individually.
In addition to standard language immersion programs, volunteer programs have been gaining popularity in recent years. Dubbed “Voluntourism,” programs exist worldwide that allow people to do things to give back to local communities, for example, working with children in orphanages, teaching English, helping out in national parks, and building schools. Some language travel-based companies combine volunteer programs with language immersion programs, so even people with few language skills can participate, not to mention learn lots of language in a short amount of time.
Another type of program that is gaining popularity are business and professional language programs. Some of these simply focus on vocabulary for communicating in the business world. Others are highly specialized for different occupations, such as banking, economics, fashion, law, marketing, social work, and much more! These types of programs are typically designed to be intense and condensed, with more lessons per day, keeping in mind most business people’s hectic schedules.
All Study Abroad is an excellent resource for researching and comparing all different types of study abroad programs.
