As we've blogged about previously, we are strong believers in preparing for your study abroad trip as much as possible. Many types of language software can be quite expensive, however, especially for language travelers that are on a shoestring budget. A cool resource we've uncovered is Praxis Language, which offers online podcasts in several different languages: Chinese, Spanish, French
, and Italian. ChinesePod was their flagship podcast, and is well worth considering. Praxis has followed up with an excellent collection of podcasts in all four languages.
Praxis Language has several different levels of membership: Basic, Guided, Premium, and Executive. The cost ranges from very affordable to on the expensive side, with a range in between. Both the Guided and Premium levels have excellent benefits not included in most language learning programs, and both are offered at substantially less than most programs. Premium has the following: full suite of online lesson review (over 1000 lessons),vocabulary study tools (i.e. flashcards), extensive reference resources, and iPhone access. The Guided option is pretty cool, as it includes everything that the Premium level does, but also includes a 30-minute phone call to assess each student's needs and ability, monthly study plans to keep you on track, your own counselor to answer your individual questions, and a personalized weekly 10-minute phone call to practice pronunciation and vocabulary. Pretty cool, huh?
